Soothe Eye Discomfort & Restore Your Vision
How do dry eyes affect you? Instead of waking up feeling refreshed, do your eyes start the day with a burning sensation? Or maybe your eyes tire out quickly during computer work. Your contact lenses might be too uncomfortable to wear, or your vision may remain blurry even with an accurate glasses prescription.
Dry Santa Ana winds, long hours behind the wheel, the inevitable summer dehydration, and even office air conditioning can all contribute to your dry eye discomfort. You’re not alone in this. And there are treatment options that can help restore your normal eye comfort.

Book AppointmentWhat Is Dry Eye?
Your eyes need a consistent layer of tears to stay lubricated, clean, and nourished. Dry eye disease, sometimes called just “dry eye,” is a chronic condition caused by a lack of tears, either in quantity or quality.
Some of the most common dry eye symptoms include:
- On and off blurred vision
- Burning, stinging, or scratchy eyes
- Excessively watery eyes
- Light sensitivity
- Redness or “bloodshot” eyes
Treating Dry Eye Can Make a Big Difference
Dry eye is more than an irritating feeling. Your eye’s tear film is a consistent layer of moisture that helps protect your eyes and keep their surface clear. When your eyes lack moisture, you can experience blurry vision, redness, and discomfort. You may also be at a greater risk of eye infections and corneal abrasions (scratches), which can significantly impair your vision.
Your eyes deserve better. Imagine not needing to constantly reach for eye drops. Or not feeling the urge to close your eyes frequently. That’s what normal could feel like. And it can be a life-changing difference.
How Our Optometrist Evaluates Dry Eye
With a slit lamp exam, we can take a closer look at the front of your eye. We’ve upgraded our technology to make this noninvasive technique more in-depth. Now, we use an infrared light system to assess your meibomian glands and a Wratten filter to highlight dry patches.
During your dry eye screening, we can also identify other signs of dry eye, like thinning of the cornea, early tear film breakup time, and surface irregularities. Keeping an eye on signs like these can help us diagnose your eye health and track how your treatment is progressing.
Our Approaching to Managing Dry Eye
At LuminOptix Optometry, we believe in a noninvasive, non-medical first approach to managing dry eye. We’re all about helping you achieve that normal feeling with minimal discomfort. Dry eye screenings are a part of our routine eye exams, but we can go more in-depth when we identify a concern.
We start with practical strategies that you can use every day, including preservative-free prescription eye drops, Oasis cleansing eyelid sprays, adding humidifiers to dry spaces, and quality nutritional supplements that are created to be gentle on the stomach, like omega-3s.
We complement this approach with in-office treatments that help target one of the root causes of dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
Comprehensive Dry Eye Treatments
Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)
Originally used as a skin rejuvenating treatment, low level light therapy (LLLT) uses low levels of red (infrared) light. The gentle light can be used on sensitive skin and can be absorbed by your meibomian glands to help fight inflammation and stimulate oil flow.
LLLT is designed to be a quick, noninvasive “lunchtime” procedure that can significantly reduce dry eye symptoms.
MiBoFlo
MiBoFlo can be like giving your eyes a spa day. The MiBo ThermoFlo treatment uses gentle heat to massage your eyelids. The warmth can loosen oils that have become thick and sticky, causing blockages in your meibomian glands.
MiBoFlo treatment can be a relaxing experience, and many patients notice an improvement in their symptoms immediately after the procedure.
Meibomian Gland Expression
Your eyelids have tiny glands (meibomian glands) that produce oil (meibum), which are essential for sustaining your tear film. Sometimes, these glands can get blocked or stop producing enough oil, leading to dry eyes.
Through meibomian gland expression, we can gently squeeze your eyelids to help move any blockages or clogged oil and improve the flow of oil into your tear film.
Eyelid Debridement
Eyelid debridement is a deep exfoliating treatment designed to be gentle on your eyes. It can help you feel refreshed and revitalized. Think of eye drops like breath mints and eyelid sprays like brushing your teeth at home—eyelid debridement is like the deep clean you get at the dentist.
Through eyelid debridement, we can remove any excess skin, debris, or bacteria that can contribute to inflammation or blocked eyelid glands. It’s a common treatment for patients with dry eye related to blepharitis.
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are tiny devices inserted into your tear ducts to stop your tears from draining away too quickly. With punctal plugs, your tears can stay on your eyes’ surface longer, helping prolong lubrication and restore comfort. Punctal plugs can be temporary (dissolving) or semi-permanent.
